Utilities are faced with a growing and maturing mix of communications options.  These include: radio frequency (RF), Power Line Communications (PLC) (Wikipedia), Broadband over Powerlines (BPL), and WiFi (Wikipedia).  Presently, RF is used more often than not - and sometimes in combination with PLC or BPL.  Wireless mesh technology (Wikipedia) is also gaining acceptance.
